CAIRO (Worthy News) – Christians in southern Egypt were recovering from shock and injuries Friday after a violent crowd attacked a Coptic church in the latest reminder of the pressures facing believers despite government efforts to improve their status.
The July 8 violence in the Upper Egypt village of El-Tal El-Qibliya erupted when a protest escalated into a mob throwing stones at the church while shouting insults at worshippers.
Several Christians were injured in the attack, and both the church building and the priest’s vehicle were damaged, Christian sources told Worthy News.
Police were deployed to the area and eventually restored order after dozens of local residents reportedly took part in the anti-church rally.
“In the aftermath, four Christian men were arrested, along with an unknown number of Muslim protesters,” advocacy group Voice of the Martyrs Canada (VOMC) told Worthy News.
