House completes congressional approval of same-sex marriage

By Tom Strode - Posted at Baptist Press: WASHINGTON (BP) – Congress has given final approval to enshrining same-sex marriage in the law. The U.S. House of Representatives voted 258-169 for the Respect for Marriage Act (RMA) Thursday (Dec. 8), 10 days after the Senate approved the same legislation. With the votes, Congress has decided to repeal the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). While the measure does not require states to legalize same-sex marriage, it mandates federal and state recognition of any gay marriage considered legal in the jurisdiction where it took place. Passage of the proposal by both the Senate and House serves as a watershed, congressional redefinition of the institution of marriage. Congressional Democrats led the effort to enact such legislation while expressing concerns a more conservative U.S. Supreme Court might reverse its 2015 Obergefell v. Hodges decision that legalized gay marriage. Congress’ approval occurred during a lame-duck session prior to the tran

'Have the Courage' to Protect Religious Liberty in Same-Sex Marriage Bill, GOP Senators Told

By Michael Foust - Posted at Christian Headlines: A coalition of Republican senators is urging their colleagues to filibuster a same-sex marriage bill until an amendment is added protecting religious liberty. The Nov. 17 letter from U.S. Sen. Mike Lee and 20 other GOP senators asserts that as written, the Respect for Marriage Act would lead to “more litigation” against institutions and individuals who believe marriage should be defined as the union of one man, one woman. Lee is the sponsor of the religious liberty amendment, which was first covered in The Daily Signal. “The undersigned ask that you oppose cloture on the Respect for Marriage Act unless the Lee amendment is added to the bill,” the letter says. “The free exercise of religion is absolutely essential to the health of our Republic. We must have the courage to protect it.” Continue here...

Senate takes step toward codifying same-sex marriage

By Tom Strode - Posted at Baptist Press: Published November 16, 2022 WASHINGTON (BP)—The U.S. Senate took the first and an apparently decisive step Wednesday (Nov. 16) toward codifying same-sex marriage into law with the aid of more than one-fifth of Republicans in the chamber. Senators voted 62-37 to invoke cloture, as the procedural move is known, and thereby bring up for a final vote the Respect for Marriage Act (RMA). All 50 Democrats and 12 Republicans voted in favor of the motion, which needed 60 votes to succeed. The bill would repeal the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and require federal and state recognition of same-sex marriages considered legal in the jurisdiction where they took place. The Senate is expected to vote soon to approve passage of the RMA, which will require only a majority and will serve as a watershed, congressional redefinition of the institution of marriage if enacted. The House of Representatives approved the RMA in July, when 47 GOP members joined al

Are drag queens “what America is all about”?

By Dr. Jim Denison - Posted at Denison Forum/ The Daily Article : The Emmy Awards were held last night. Among the honorees: Zendaya won best lead actress in a drama series for HBO’s Euphoria , which is so sexualized and graphic that even Common Sense Media’s review is forced to use descriptions I will not repeat here. The same goes for their review of HBO’s The White Lotus , which won for outstanding limited series. I could go on. When a political leader claims that drag queens are “what America is all about,” transgender characters are increasingly featured in video games and on television, and a Texas teacher tells students to refer to pedophiles as “minor-attracted persons,” it is clear that our moral compass is not just broken but nonexistent. Australia’s Margaret Court, winner of twenty-four Grand Slam singles titles, made news during the recent US Open when she disclosed that she has become a persona non grata in the tennis world because of her Christian beliefs.
