Wait-and-See? Challenges Lie Ahead for Trump and Evangelicals

By David Brody - Posted at CBN News: While it's clear Donald Trump is all-in for 2024, his MAGA hold on evangelicals may have lost some strength. A lot has happened since last time around: January 6th; the fallout with Mike Pence; the Mar-a-Lago classified documents; the continued focus on the past election and just overall drama. So does he have work to do this time around with evangelicals? "He has real work to do, let's not kid ourselves," says his former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski. "I'm sure that the team has a plan, but the work with the evangelicals and others that he may have taken for granted in 2020 is very real." As it stands, some of the prominent faithful who fervently backed Trump last time are still in the pews, not yet willing to commit. There's been no official support from the likes of Franklin Graham, Jack Graham or Albert Mohler – all previous backers. As for Pastor Robert Jeffress, once a vocal Trump defender says he'

5 Key Takeaways from the Second Jan. 6 Committee Hearing

By Michael Foust - Posted at Christian Headlines : June 13, 2022 The U.S. House Select Committee on the Jan. 6 Attack held its second day of hearings Monday, asking questions of in-person witnesses and playing recorded clips from previous witnesses, including President Trump's attorney general, campaign manager and advisors. Here are five key takeaways: 1. BILL BARR: TRUMP WAS' DETACHED FROM REALITY' Bill Bar, Trump's attorney general, said he disagreed with Trump's argument that Dominion machines had skewed the election results. "He went off on a monologue saying that there was now definitive evidence involving fraud through the Dominion machines," Barr said, referencing a Dec. 14 meeting. "... He said, you know, 'This is absolute proof that the Dominion machines were rigged. The report means that I'm going to have a second term.' And then he gave me a copy of the report." Barr said the report looked "very amateurish" and

Christian Leaders and Controversies: The Case of Francis Collins

By Jan F. Dudt - Posted at The Aquila Report: "In essence, what these people were saying is that Francis Collins is such a good scientist because you can hardly tell he is a Christian from his work. As a much younger biology professor at the time, I was aghast at this. A Christian has separated his religious views from his personal life. Why is that a good thing?" There is always a dilemma for Christians in best handling and reacting to the positions and counsel of Christian leaders. Often these are people we have grown to trust and respect as followers of Christ. Their convictions at times are consistent with Christian principles and biblical wisdom. They champion appropriate positions and defend causes from a historically Christian perspective. They gain traction and respect even among cultural, political, and religious opponents because of the internally consistent strength of their arguments and their winsome and gracious demeanor. And yet, it is impossible for any falle

Lara Trump, Tiffany Trump Speak at ‘Trump Pride’ Events to Rally Homosexual Vote

By Heather Clark - Posted at Christian News Network: “Trump Pride” events, organized by the Trump Pride advisory board and featuring speakers such as daughter-in-law Lara Trump, daughter Tiffany Trump and others, are being held in various cities across the country in order to rally the homosexual vote for Election Day. “[T]he entire family is with us (homosexuals). Don and Ivanka and Eric [and] Lara, everyone is with us,” Richard Grenell, former U.S. Ambassador to Germany and current Trump Pride coalition co-chair told those gathered in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania , a suburb of Philadelphia, on Oct. 13. “This is a family that for decades has been fighting for gay equality,” he said. “This isn’t new.” Read more here. ‘My Great Honor!’ Trump Tweets in Sharing Video Calling Him the ‘Most Pro-Gay President in American History’

By Heather Clark - Posted at Christian News Network: WASHINGTON — “My great honor!!!” were the words of President Trump in re-sharing a video on Thursday that characterized him as “the most pro-gay president in American history.” The video was released by Log Cabin Republicans, a homosexual lobbying Republican group, and recorded by Richard Grenell, former U.S. Ambassador to Germany and current special presidential envoy for Serbia and Kosovo peace negotiations. Grenell has led the administration’s campaign to decriminalize homosexuality worldwide. “President Trump is the most pro-gay president in American history,” Grenell states in the video, which seeks to demonstrate why Trump is, and has consistently been, more pro-homosexual than Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden. “I can prove it.” He outlines that Trump knew he was a homosexual when he appointed Grenell as acting director of national intelligence earlier this year, but it “didn’t even faze” the president. How Jay Sekulow Got to the Floor of the US Senate

By Mark Pinsky - Posted at MinistryWatch : For someone who has reached the pinnacle of the American legal system — if defending the president of the United States in his impeachment trial can be said to be the pinnacle — Jay Sekulow came perilously close to complete failure as a young lawyer. In 1987, Sekulow was a partner in his own small Atlanta law firm when he stumbled into a morass of changing IRS regulations regarding some residential renovations he was handling for clients. As a result, he was sued, forcing his firm to collapse in bankruptcy. Documents filed at the time with federal bankruptcy court said the firm had $13,071,748 in debts and $638,000 in assets. Bereft and depressed, Sekulow was rescued not long after by an old friend: Moishe Rosen, the founder of Jews for Jesus, the Messianic group that accepts Jesus as savior but retains traditional Jewish forms of worship. At the age of 18, while a student at Atlanta Baptist College, now Mercer University, Sekulow had le

Trump called out by some Christians for using ‘Lord’s name in vain’ at fiery NC rally

“You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.” Exodus 20:7 By Mark Price - Posted at The Charlotte Observer Published July 18, 2019 The controversial “send her back” crowd chant at President Donald Trump’s North Carolina rally  may have gotten all the headlines, but some Christians are grumbling over something most of the media completely ignored. Trump cursed, and it was not just a few vulgarities. He took the Lord’s name in vain. Twice. Read more here. Make Sodom Great Again? Trump’s ‘Celebrate Pride Month’ Tweets Urge Nations to Join in Effort to Legalize Homosexuality By Heather Clark - Posted at  Christian News Network: May 31, 2019 WASHINGTON — President Trump posted two tweets on Friday in recognition of homosexual and transgender “Pride Month,” asking Americans to “stand in solidarity” with homosexuals who live in countries where such sexual practices are illegal, as well as for nations to join his administration’s campaign to decriminalize homosexuality worldwide. “As we celebrate LGBT Pride Month and recognize the outstanding contributions LGBT people have made to our great nation, let us also stand in solidarity with the many LGBT people who live in dozens of countries worldwide that punish, imprison, or even execute individuals on the basis of their sexual orientation,” he wrote . “My administration has launched a global campaign to decriminalize homosexuality and invite all nations to join us in this effort

Trump Tweets Support for Aborting Babies in Certain Cases Amid National Outcry to Outlaw Abortion

By Heather Clark - Posted at Christian News Network: WASHINGTON — Amid a number of states considering bills this legislative season surrounding concerns over the ongoing murder of unborn children, President Trump posted a series of tweets on Saturday evening in which he reiterated that he identifies as pro-life, but believes in the exceptions of rape, incest and the life of the mother. “As most people know, and for those who would like to know, I am strongly pro-life, with the three exceptions — rape, incest and protecting the life of the mother — the same position taken by Ronald Reagan,” he tweeted . Trump then touted his achievements in his tenure and urged Americans to stick with him for the next election. Continue reading...

Truth, Power, and Pence at the SBC

By Jonathan Leeman - Posted at TGC : I’m sitting here at the Southern Baptist Convention. Earlier today Vice President Mike Pence addressed the convention. We were told he initiated the offer to speak. I wish we had not accepted. Don’t misunderstand. I’m grateful to God for our nation. I want him to bless it. But here’s a question for my fellow Southern Baptists and evangelicals more broadly: can you name a place in the Bible where God sends a ruler of a (non-Israelite) nation to speak to God’s people? Is the pattern not just the opposite? Moses challenges Pharaoh. Daniel confronts Nebuchadnezzar. John the Baptist calls out Herod. And Paul appeals to Caesar. The biblical flow chart for confrontation occurs in Psalm 2: “Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth.” The arrow moves from God’s people to rulers of the nations, not rulers to God’s people. Jonah didn’t invite the king of Nineveh to challenge him. He said, “Repent.” Permit me to remain neutral

North Koreans ‘betrayed’ by human rights omission in Trump-Kim agreement

Posted at Voice for the Persecuted : ( World Watch Monitor ) North Koreans were “betrayed” by the failure of US President Donald Trump to include human rights provisions in his agreement with the country’s leader, Kim Jong-un, following their historic meeting in Singapore, according to Human Rights Watch’s Asia Director, Phil Robertson. “The North Korean people have suffered for so long,” he told the BBC World Service , “and it looks like they’ll have to suffer for a little longer.” But after the meeting Trump said the many North Koreans currently being held in forced-labour camps were “one of the great winners today”. Responding to a question from ABC News ’s Jon Karl about whether North Korea’s oppression of its people was worse than any other regime on earth, Trump said: “It’s a rough situation over there; there’s no question about it, and we did discuss it today pretty strongly. “I mean, knowing what the main purpose of what we were doing is – de-nuking – but we did discuss it

The Economy and Defense Sustain Trump's Evangelical Support

Donald Trump is sworn in as president on January 20, 2017: Trump, wife Melania , son Donald Jr. , son Barron , daughter Ivanka , son Eric , and daughter Tiffany  (Source: Wikipedia ) By George Barna - Posted at the American Culture and Faith Institute: Donald Trump holds onto Evangelical support despite the media thrashings. Donald Trump was voted into office on the strength of support from Christians. The final 2016 vote tally showed that 57 percent of all self-identified Christians backed the brash real estate magnate while less than half as many non-Christians (26 percent) gave him their vote. In contrast, Hillary Clinton’s main source of support was the non-Christian population. Overall, 62 percent of voters who are aligned with a non-Christian faith or who are among the religious skeptics (i.e., atheists, agnostics, and nones) voted for the Democratic Party nominee. She garnered just 37 percent of the votes cast by those who claimed to be Christian. At the beginning of th

Being Outraged at the NFL is a Waste of Time

By Kelvey Vander Hart - Posted at Caffeinated Thoughts : Over the past week, the outrage at the National Football League has been astronomical. Escalated by President Donald Trump’s condemnation, people have responded to the planned protests of NFL players in droves. It’s difficult to get on any social media platform without having something related to the protests come up right away. The responses have been specifically dominated by conservatives who are outraged at the NFL for defending players who protest. The popular rhetoric has been to point out disrespect for our troops. “How dare they kneel during the anthem when so many people have died for this country, that flag?” they argue. What I would like to broadcast to all these outraged conservatives is that getting your feathers ruffled by NFL protests is an absolute waste of your time. Even if you disagree with the argument being made, shouldn’t we be encouraging peaceful protest? These players are exercising their Fir

Trump's Spending Deal Funds Planned Parenthood

President Donald Trump meeting with congressional leaders in the Oval Office.  (Screen Capture - CNS News) By Terrence P. Jeffrey - Posted at CNS News : "This is the third spending deal President Trump has signed that funds Planned Parenthood." (CNSNews.com) - The spending deal that President Donald Trump cut last week with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.)--and that was passed by a Republican-controlled Congress—breaks one of Trump’s unambiguous campaign promises: It funds Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion provider. Fiscal 2017 will end on Sept. 30 and the spending law Trump signed Friday will essentially continue federal funding from that date through Dec. 8 at the same levels and for the same purposes as the legislation currently funding the government. Faith, Fire and Fury: Trump, Jeffress, and the Dangerous Theology of Kings

By Rev. Brandon Gilvin - Posted at Patheos.com: Published 8.09.2017 I have a love-hate relationship with journalism that covers religion. On the one hand, I love a good feature story about a monastery in the middle of rural America, or a story about religious traditions working together in innovative ways, or an insightful profile about someone who has examined her own faith enough to speak about it without resorting to platitudes. But then, there are the stories that just make me cringe. Tonight, when I sat down to look over some of the daily headlines, I caught a story that began with a cringe-worthy line : “Texas megachurch Pastor Robert Jeffress, one of President Trump’s evangelical advisers who preached the morning of his inauguration, has released a statement saying the president has the moral authority to take out North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.” Of course, this was following President Trump’s statement today that North Korea would be met with “Fire and Fury

Two Responses to James Comey and the UK Election

Former FBI Director James Comey leaves a closed session with the Senate Intelligence Committee in the Hart Senate Office Building on Capitol Hill June 8, 2017 in Washington, DC. Comey said that President Donald Trump pressured him to drop the FBI's investigation into former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn and demanded Comey's loyalty during the one-on-one meetings he had with president. My wife and I listened to the entire session. Meanwhile, British citizens were casting votes in an election to determine their leader as they begin the process of exiting the European Union (the so-called “Brexit”). In light of these historic events, consider two biblical principles. One: The future is impossible to predict. O

What National Interest Does Bombing Syria Serve?

By Daniel DePetris - Posted at The Federalist : Serious observers of world affairs are having a very difficult time explaining what strategic effects the missile attack on a Syrian military airport had. The United States bombs a country’s airfield, and the president whom Washington’s foreign policy community once universally considered to be a lemon is now credited with being a resolute commander-in-chief who faced down an atrocity with flying colors. A headline in the Huffington Post couldn’t have summarized this dynamic better: “Cable News Praises Trump on Syria, Because Bombing Stuff is ‘Presidential.’” Blowing up a couple dozen planes from a war criminal’s arsenal makes us all feel good for a few days, especially if it’s in retaliation for a horrible war crime against innocent men, women, and children. Outside of a shot across the dictator’s bow, however, serious observers of world affairs are having a very difficult time explaining what strategic effects the missile at

Do Trump’s Flip Flops Reflect Lack of Constitutional Understanding?

By Bob Adelmann - Posted at The New American : The mainstream media have rejoiced because they perceive that President Donald Trump has abandoned policies and changed long-held positions that they have considered anathema. Politico said the president has “demonstrated an incredible willingness to bend his past positions, or abandon them entirely. Sometimes he offers an explanation; sometimes not.” CNN called them “stunning U-turns on key issues” reflecting “extraordinary political shape-shifting.” The “key issues” are Syria, Janet Yellen of the Federal Reserve, NAFTA, NATO, his hiring freeze, China’s currency manipulation, and the Export-Import Bank. Syria tops the list currently as the president, who promised to keep the United States out of protracted conflicts in the Middle East, has instead deepened its military involvement with a barrage of missile strikes on a Syrian airbase in retaliation for a poison gas attack on civilians. The problem is that, back in 2013,

Road Map To The Russian Connection

By Micah Morrison - Posted at Judicial Watch : The headlines out of Monday’s House Intelligence Committee hearing on the Russian connection confirmed what has been widely reported: the FBI is investigating Team Trump’s alleged involvement with Russian government entities during the 2016 election and Mr. Trump’s charge that Barack Obama wiretapped him during the campaign is baseless. Every high-profile congressional hearing is largely kabuki theater and this one was no different: the party out of power sees abuses everywhere and the party in power plays defense, but careful observers often can glean indications of what is happening behind the scenes. That’s the case with Monday’s session. The money quote comes from FBI Director James Comey. The FBI’s Counterintelligence Division, Mr. Comey said, is “investigating the nature of any links between individuals associated with the Trump campaign and the Russian government, and whether there was any coordination between the campaign and
