A Florida sheriff’s office started investigating the youth minister of a prominent Reformed church after he suddenly resigned and went online to protest what he called slander and harassment.

Stephen Adams, 39, announced last month that he was leaving St. Andrew’s Chapel, the controversywracked Sanford, Florida, church founded by the late R. C. Sproul and led by Burk Parsons. The church’s ruling elders said they were sad to see him go. On March 20, St. Andrew’s released another statement supporting him: “Pastor Adams was neither dismissed nor asked to leave,” it said. “We are sincerely grateful for his years of dedicated service among us.”

But Seminole County Sheriff’s Office investigator Brittany Schick had more questions. Schick, who works in the child protective division, contacted multiple former students in Adams’ former youth group last week. She asked whether Adams committed “lewd and lascivious exhibition,” a second-degree felony under Florida law, or other sorts of sexual misconduct.

Zachary Lamirande, a member of the youth group, received a call. He told Schick about a mission trip to Cherokee, North Carolina in 2015. He said that when he and several others were showering at a Christian campground, Adams, then 28, ripped open the curtain on his shower stall, leaving him exposed and deeply embarrassed.

Adams walked away “snickering and smirking,” according to Uriah Lennox, another youth group member who was also showering at the time.
