Millions of Christians worldwide face ‘very high or extreme’ persecution for their faith

In all, 380 million Christians face “very high or extreme” levels of persecution in 2025, according to the annual Open Doors World Watch List, which is a ranking of 50 countries where Christians face the most extreme persecution.

The top five countries where Christian persecution is considered extreme are 1) North Korea, 2) Somalia, 3) Yemen, 4 Libya, and 5) Sudan. In 2024, 4,476 Christians died for their faith, 7,679 churches and Christian properties were attacked, and 4,744 Christians were imprisoned or detained, according to Open Doors. Worldwide, one in seven Christians are persecuted, which includes one in five in Africa and two in five in Asia.
