The Move to the Right, Not the Remedy for What Ails Us
By Al Baker - Posted at Forget None of His Benefits:
Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people, Proverbs 14:34.Most of you reading this were thrilled with the results of the recent Presidential election. You understood that the issue ultimately was—will we be governed with a Marxist or Judeo-Christian world view? And you also are probably very hopeful that the Department of Government Efficiency will get rid of the obvious waste in all the federal government bureaucracies. You probably also are hopeful that the deep state can be dismantled and follow the lead of their President instead of simply slow walking any changes that he deems necessary. There is so much corruption in our federal government, as there is in most state and local governments. Most of us are very hopeful that we can see massive change for the better.
The tendency for all of us is to believe that this massive cleanup will transform our nation. It will not. At best such measures are like the little Dutch boy who puts his finger in the dike to hold back the waters which threaten his community. I remember the midterm election in 1994 during President Clinton’s first term where the Republicans gained a significant majority in both the House and Senate. Most of my friends were thrilled, believing this would move us back to a more Biblical approach to the burning issues which concerned us, the most important of which was abortion. That did not happen. I like to remind my conservative friends that President Clinton (no doubt due to the Reagan Republicans and their “Contract with America”) rolled back much of the welfare state and balanced our federal budget, something no other President has accomplished since that time.
Don’t be fooled by the move to the right. I am thrilled that a majority of our populace have voted in this way, but President elect Trump will be limited in what he can do for one simple reason. John Adams, the second President of the United States, said that our republic will only function if we are a righteous people. The “consent of the governed” can only work if people trust each other, if they are willing to submit to one another. Whenever greed, pride, and the pursuit of power dominate a person, then corruption with surely come as spring follows winter.
