PSALM 75; God Presiding over World Affairs
By Rev. A.P. McIntyre - Posted at Clogher Valley Free Presbyterian Church:
In an age of war, moral collapse, and political uncertainty, Psalm 75 shines as a beacon of truth. It reminds us that behind all human affairs stands the sovereign hand of God.
1: KEY QUESTIONS
Who is Really in Charge of the World?
For promotion cometh neither from the east,
nor from the west, nor from the south.
But God is the judge:
he putteth down one, and setteth up another.
Psalm 75:6-7

Who is Really in Charge of the World?
A number of years ago I did a study on this Psalm for radio as part of an evangelistic series of short studies on the entire Book of Psalms. I made mention of some of the powerful and influential people on earth at that time, who were on the news every day. Barak Obama, Angela Merkel and David Cameron featured on that list. They are unheard of today. Their ideas and opinions are of little consequence. How quickly and definitely the powerful fall. They are overtaken by events, their popularity fades or time simply eats them away. Vladimir Putin found his way into that list I made all those years ago. He’s somewhat unique as his keys to the corridors of power have been grasped longer than most. But his day too will end.
This Psalm is a good study for the world in which we find ourselves. It seems to me that the Russia – Ukraine War, the Israeli – Palestinian Conflict, the ambitions of Iran to build a nuclear weapon with the recent interventions of Israel and the USA and the competition between USA and China for economic supremacy have produced a cocktail of events which could potentially change every one of our lives.
There is not only upheaval among the nations but there are also divisions and hatred within the democratic nations of the west which are unprecedented post World War Two. Much of this is due to rising levels of immigration. Islam is the fastest growing religion in absolute numbers in the UK and could reach 20% of the population by the end of the century. Increasing polarisation is a new feature of life in the West, leading to a weakening of our national identity.
In the midst of all of this uncertainty who is in charge?
