Jesus Is Not Your American Patriot

By Ameen Hudson - Posted at The Gospel Coalition:

No earthly nation, including America, has a monopoly on God’s favor and blessing. All of God’s promises and blessings are directed toward the multi-ethnic, multi-cultural, and multinational body of Christ.
I live in the South, where “God and country” is a popular sentiment. Despite the fact that America was reputedly built on Judeo-Christian values, this seemingly honorable motto is problematic. It fails to promote an ideology that seeks God’s glory and multinational kingdom while encouraging American citizens to submit to his will.

Instead, it turns Jesus into a patriot.

Such a mentality tends to confuse God’s interests with those of a political party. It makes the United States the center of God’s affections, above every other nation. Critiquing the sentiment is seen not only as an assault on the principles of American democracy, but on God himself.

It conflates religion and politics, yielding a false god made in America’s image.

  1. Amen!! Thank you for sharing this absolutely wonderful article that says the truth which is always and will be forever, in Jesus Christ... thank you my dear sister Angela Wittman, for always giving King Jesus the glory... I have been saying this since the Holy Spirit revealed Gods' truth in me... I know I am hated at times and called a betrayer when I don't stand for the flag but I only stand in allegiance to our God and our Savior, the Messiah, Emmanuel... I love all people and I care about what people have been through but just because someone went to war does not mean I should worship him... I might shake his hand and thank him, if I know he is a believer... I have fought many physical and spiritual battles for my children, for my mother who was dying of aids, for myself, and have given to the poor, whether through money or volunteering, and have helped children, the elderly, etc... and so I do not ask for anyone to stand in allegiece of me... if a man is truly in Christ, he would never ask people to stand for him or to bend for him or to acknowledge a flag he might make as a symbol of his works... I don't think bad of anyone who does stand for the flag because they are still honoring God when they say 'one nation under God'... I love to see people being respectful to others who have done so much that helped build this nation and i love to see people together for a greater good but as long as it is glorifying Jesus... but if there was no 'one nation under God' then I would see that no different than the Grammy Awards, where people are just exalting others in the name of man... for to many go to war or join the military, not to save the country but to feed their families, or to kill out of pleasure or to do what seems noble or for many other reasons and even if they do what they do to help this country, I do not believe in the wars that have been made up to cause death and destruction, fear and compromise, which is the evil works of many, who are in leadership and have control over what the military is to do or not to do... I pray that our military stays home to help the needy and to keep things harmoneus and to defend us from terror but in this fallen world, none of this will ever be perfect, until Jesus renews all the world and heaven, ridding war, starvation, wickedness, and all other evil, condemning satan and his followers, in the pits of hell forever... I have been to jail for my children and I have almost been to jail to try to stop murder of other children at planned parenthood but the difference is that i am doing what everyone should feel the need to do, whether they do or not and I know i am nobody, but a saved sinner, unworthy but unconditionally loved by our Father, Jesus Christ...
