In the Valley with Facebook

By Angela Wittman

The need for a firm foundation (Scripture) is vital to the Christian  - new and old alike!

"And after six days Jesus taketh with him Peter, and James, and John, and leadeth them up into an high mountain apart by themselves: and he was transfigured before them." Mark 9:2 KJV

Years ago while working outside the home, I began my day with a devotional, Scripture reading and prayer. I compared this time spent as being on the "mountain" with the Lord before descending into the "valley" of the workplace which was full of profanity, materialism and envy.

For the past few years, I have been  deactivating my Facebook account periodically due to various reasons. Sometimes I would find I just didn't have the time to spend communicating in a semi-meaningful way with others or I would read of the Facebook founders supporting a pro-abortion or same-sex marriage agenda and felt my participation in their platform was helping to support it. Then after a few months absence I would find myself desiring Christian fellowship and would eventually once more activate my account.

Lately, I'm once more feeling as though I'm descending into the valley where profanity, materialism and envy thrives. I haven't returned to work, but I have been active on Facebook and while the majority of my "friends" profess Christ, sometimes their posts and comments reflect otherwise.

Here are some thoughts about Facebook for the reader to consider:

  1. Facebook appears to promote envy as this commentator explains in his article How Facebook Envy Fuels Donald Trump.
  2. Another author has written about Justice Scalia's death, the Christian response to this type of tragedy and the harsh comments she read on social media.
  3. Facebook (and other social media) help promote self-love and idolatry, which as Christians we should be putting to death in our hearts, instead of feeding it.
Friends, I'm happy for your blessings, but I would rather they be spiritual than material, so please don't be offended if I don't "like" looking at your new cars or "selfies" of you in the latest fashions and hairstyles. I'd rather know you're growing in the Christian faith.

In conclusion, let's look after each other's souls on social media platforms when posting a picture perfect "selfie" or photos of our new cars and homes. Perhaps taking a few minutes to check your heart (motive) would do a world of good for a fellow believer who might be struggling to make ends meet or one who has recently lost their job or life savings to medical expenses. Maybe a better post would be one of Scripture you find uplifting or a Bible teaching that you think will benefit others.

"But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."  Matthew 6:33 KJV
Amen.

* Readers and friends, please take note that I've deactivated my Facebook account (again!) and hope you will "follow" my posts on Twitter, Google+ or at my blogs. Right now I need some refreshment time on the mountain top with our Lord and Savior. May He bless you all!  :)
