Region's U.S. attorney stepping down after five years on the job

...Wigginton said he walks away with a deeper understanding of one of the most difficult, deadly issues facing Southern Illinois: a rapid rise in the illegal use of of heroin, prescription opioids, and foreign-made methamphetamine.
After five years on the job as a federal prosecutor for the bottom-third of Illinois, Stephen Wigginton has announced his plans to step down as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois.

His resignation is effective Dec. 11. Wigginton is returning to the private sector, and has accepted a job with Armstrong Teasdale, a large law firm with offices across the United States and China.
